Drawstring pouch from the cave of letters

In a cave in Israel a good number of leather artefacts from the Bar Kokhba period has been found. The finds seemed to have been stored away in the cave for safety to be collected later. One contained some writings, hence the name that was given to the cave: ‘the cave of letters’.

One of the best know bags from the cave is a drawstring pouch with a size of approx 34 cm square with triangular inserts on the sides. It was made of leather dyed red with a couple of decorations: two reinforcement strips on the top of the bag, wheels in the middle of the front and bag and some straps hanging down from these.

Note that inside this pouch a smaller ‘envelope’  has been found.
